Matthew worked incredibly hard today. Yesterday we were still easing back into the week, even though it was Wednesday! I told him today we really needed to catch up and get some things done, and he did it.
Finished the Awesome Archaeology book which he’s been slooooowly reading for a couple of weeks. So, we’ve been back in school now for nearly a month, but only 2 books finished… not too bad, but not too good either. I was aiming for at least 1 book a week, so I think we may have to change some things to make it happen.
One thing Matthew enjoys is me reading to him. I think I may start reading a few chapters to him, and then allowing him to carry on for a set amount of time. When he was in school, they did Accelerated Reading. In theory it seems to be a good concept, and tests their comprehension of books & they can move up the ‘Reading Rocket’. Unfortunately, all 3 of our older children would choose a book from the library, enthusiastically read, and then be really disappointed when the book wasn’t in the system. This resulted in a lot less reading overall. I’d like to put the enjoyment back into reading, and hope that I can rekindle a love of reading.
By tomorrow we should be finished with the Archaeology unit, and will be moving on to The First Nomads/Cavemen which is Chapter 1 in The Story of the World. We found a great read along list over at AirSkull. I couldn’t find a few of the books in the first section, but we’ll make do! Matthew has chosen Boy of the Painted Cave to start with, so we’ll test out that reading idea tomorrow!
I’ll keep a running list of books read somewhere on the blog, but for now it’ll be at the end of random reading posts!
